For f*ck's sake.

Me and this tree, we are in a fight.

Cryptomeria japonica 'Not so elegant now, are we bucko?'

I removed the stake, since it's been in the ground almost a year now. We still have some lines up, which we need to loosen so it will learn to stand on his own. Unfortunately, one line snapped and now it's doing this. Will it ever learn to stand up straight? I knew I should have put in a Korean Fir but they take sooo long to grow.

  1. Do these trees all look like that in nature? It's sort of odd to think that they need all this training to stand straight. But then, I've never done much tree planting. Have you tried just shouting at it: "Stop slouching!"

  2. Right? I love your idea of yelling--I'll let you know how it works. :)

  3. My trick is to walk around loudly proclaiming that I'm OVER that plant and I've already bought its replacement. For some reason, the second I buy a replacement plant, the original plant somehow improves/emerges/blooms. Of course, then I have another plant to figure out what to do with.

  5. Sometimes we all need a little extra help. Stakes "discipline" and encourage trees for a long time at our house. We just aren't willing to start over on our vision of loveliness, so we put up with the distinctly unlovely stakes for longer than we wish we had to. Your cryptomeria is certainly an attractive tree despite his poor posture. Maybe he'll grow up and stop slouching. Not that I did.
