Damn it.

This is why we can't have nice things.

A cat or a raccoon or someone who really hates birds broke the $5 birdbath that I drove all the way to Cornelius in rush hour traffic to get. This is the third one I've lost. I don't know how I can find them any cheaper than that.

I give up.

  1. I'm guessing something was just trying to get a drink of water. In winter I frequently see squirrels at my (heated) bird bath.

  2. This birdbath was really heavy, so it had to be something much heavier than a squirrel. I've seen squirrels, crows, an fat robins drink and bathe with no problems. But maybe we have a squirrel with a glandular problem . . .

  3. Aw, man! That sucks. Our dogs keep the existence of critters in our yard to a minimum, but my $9 Aldi bird bath has held up pretty well so far.

  4. Is yours metal? I think I need to go that route so it can fall over without breaking. You REALLY make me want a Boston Terrier though--maybe I can convince Greg that we need dogs to save the birdbath.

  5. I'm guessing raccoon...it would take a hefty cat to topple that! I'm so ghetto that when ours fell over this spring and a big chunk broke off, I just turned it so the intact side faced the street...only we know that it's a busted POS ;-)

  6. LOL, that's what I did with the other birdbath. It's got a big chunk out of the base!

  7. No no...don't give up. Some of the best ideas come as workarounds to foil the critters. Metal sounds good, maybe with a support that is driven into the ground?

  8. Mine is just plastic. Metal would be awesome. Speaking of which I am currently obsessed with getting an old school metal sun dial for the front garden. (Watching too much Downton Abbey, I think.) and BTs are the BEST! They are crazy but awesome. Our old dog (now dead) Logan caught and killed two and a half possums (one wasn't really dead), a squirrel, and two moles in her day. Brodie (now 12 and slightly less spry than he once was) caught a bird right out of the air once!

  9. No, don't give up. Just create something with a galvanized washtub on a stump, or whatever. Anyone who can sew her own midmod draperies can certainly come up with something equally creative for a bird bath.

  10. Well shoot, now I want a sundial too.

  11. Maybe I could drive a metal post through a stump and THEN it won't fall over. :)
