Entryway, take two

A year ago, right before Thanksgiving, I decided to paint our entryway. The color didn't turn out quite like it was supposed to but we lived with it.

So shiny! So blue!

When I consulted with Anna to pick a paint color for the dining room she noticed that we have a lot of mid-range brown furniture and suggested French Press by Benjamin Moore for the entryway.

The color has really grown on me but initially both Greg and I missed having blue in here. How silly is that? I really like mixing brown and black but Greg isn't a fan of the black doors with this color.

I'm really, really, really over gallery walls (I blame Pinterest) but I still like them in very small spaces. I'd love to cover every inch of our bathroom in artwork . . . too bad humidity is so bad for it. I crammed all the spare artwork I could find to juj it up in here.

Greg was teasing that some day someone else will own this house and they'll see all the layers of paint and think they were applied over a 60 year period when in reality it was over three. For now I think this is staying. I finally admitted that our baseboards are so layered in paint that I can't freehand a straight line and used Frog Tape. Holy shit, that stuff actually works!

I'm thinking a more colorful rug will make me fall in love with this entryway. Any opinions?

  1. I love it, I'd think about painting the ceiling too to cut down on the contrast and make it more nook-ish. I too love the look of covering small spaces w/frames. Powder rooms are perfect for that, not so much a steamy bath and unfortch I only have the latter. Hallways and entryways are good gallery opportunities though and I like how it frees up living spaces.

  3. Well, I like the brown much better than the blue, especially since it's not so shiny. I like the mix of black and brown. The artwork looks great in there too. Although I am wondering what you did with the framed leaf (is it a Tetrapanax leaf?)

  4. It's a nice shade of brown and goes well with the door. You can always reintroduce blue into the scene by using a blue entrance mat, perhaps a striped one too. At least that's non committal and if it doesn't work you can easily change it.

  5. I noticed you added art work that incorporates blue. I think french blue or another light to medium-ish blue would work better in that space. The brown seems to box it in rather than open it up.

  6. I think the brown plays up the art more than the blue color did. I have mixed feelings about the rug. It could end up looking too busy, although I have to say that I added a very colorful rug to our entry a few months ago and I love it.

I'm going to throw in a vote for the brown. It's really a rich and dreamy color. I love blues, all hues, but the brown really allows the artwork to pop.

  8. I've got no problem with brown and black together, but I do think maybe a rug with the two colors (and some other fun colors) might harmonize it a bit more? I promise I'm not a creeper, but I had a dream about your light in your dining room the other night. I'm a weirdo. But that light is awesome.

  10. Do you ever do affiliate links to amazon and such? Cause I would totally pick up some of your recommended frog tape.

I had such a bad go with our painters tape during our kitchen painting! I will never never mock a paint job Ever again!

  11. I haven't done that yet, though sometimes I think Benjamin Moore and Home Depot should be paying me for all the love I express for them! (I picked up my Frog Tape at Home Depot, if you ever happen to be there.)
