Daphne is for winners

It's the most wonderful time of the year! I've gotten to work in the garden the past two weekends AND the daphne is blooming!

Daphne odora 'Aureomarginata'

I carry a little bud vase of daphne from room to room with me, like a weirdo. I think daphne has the best fragrance in the whole world. People should stop using those awful air fresheners and just plant more fragrant shrubs.

The best part is that my other two daphnes haven't even started blooming yet. More fragrance to come! (I'm a little high on springtime, if you can't tell.)

  1. Have you got any Lilacs for later in the season?

  2. I don't. Which cultivar do I need? :)

  3. Scratch that, I have a Korean lilac. How did I forget that?

  4. I can't walk past a Daphne without stopping to inhale deeply. I'm sure the homeowners appreciate my exclamations, every time I walk by, like it's a surprise ;-) I have to say, though, that I give the edge to Lilac...probably because of the nostalgia factor (you know how they say some smells trigger instant emotions) from my childhood. I didn't smell Daphne until I moved out here, so I love the smell...but I don't have that same instant emotional rush from it.

  5. It sounds like maybe I need to get a proper lilac. My Korean lilac smells nice but it's nothing amazing. I told a coworker recently, "Nothing smells better than daphne," and she replied, "Except for jasmine." To each his own!

  6. Oh, my - I see I am going to have to plant another daphne! The one I tried died, but you know one is never enough in gardening!

  7. So you posted this just to convince me I really need that high priced black daphne I keep crushing on right?

  8. We both need that. We deserve it!

  9. Daphne is almost universally deemed a heavenly scent. Why do I have no daphne? Must be some kind of character flaw.

  10. There may be one in your future--I bought the wrong cultivar at Cistus.
